What is included in the €70 excluding VAT price?

For waste bituminous asphalt covered by the BJL service, the price includes the main stages required for PAH analysis:

• receipt and registration of the sample;
• sample pretreatment;
• preparation in accordance with NF EN 15002;
• dry matter determination in accordance with NF EN 15934;
• extraction of the organic compounds;
• quantification of 16 PAHs by GC-MS in accordance with NF EN 17503;
• the associated analytical quality controls;
• issue of the test report.

Is the price per sample or per core?

The price of €70 excluding VAT applies to one analysis.

In the simplest case, one homogeneous sample corresponds to one analysis.

However, a road core may contain several layers of different types or ages. If several layers must be tested separately, each one constitutes a separate analysis.

For example, a core containing three separate layers that each require PAH testing corresponds to three analyses.

Why should the different asphalt layers be separated?

A road may have undergone several phases of work during its service life. Some older layers may therefore have different characteristics from more recent layers.

Mixing several layers before testing may produce an average value that does not accurately represent any of the individual layers.

When the layers can technically be separated, individual characterisation may therefore be necessary depending on the purpose of the project.

How much asphalt should be sent?

BJL's currently published sample submission form specifies a minimum mass of 200 g per PAH analysis.

The sample must be correctly packaged and identified, including:

• the project reference;
• the sample reference;
• the sampling location;
• the relevant layer, where known;
• the corresponding testing request.

Is asbestos testing required before PAH testing?

BJL's currently published conditions require an asbestos test report for the asphalt, issued by an accredited laboratory, to be available before PAH testing is carried out.

If asbestos is confirmed in the material, PAH testing is not carried out.

If the material has not yet been tested for asbestos, BJL Laboratoires can also provide this service.
