What is asbestos air testing?
Asbestos air testing measures the concentration of asbestos fibres in the air through filter sampling followed by laboratory analysis.
It provides information about airborne asbestos fibre concentrations in:
- Asbestos removal worksites
- Buildings containing asbestos
- Industrial environments
- Areas following asbestos-related work
As a specialist asbestos laboratory, BJL Laboratoires identifies and counts asbestos fibres to determine their concentration in sampled air.
Our services support construction professionals, asbestos surveyors and industrial clients with laboratory analysis and air monitoring tailored to the purpose of the investigation.
Why measure airborne asbestos fibre concentrations?
- Assess workers’ exposure
- Compare results with the applicable regulatory values
- Assess the effectiveness of containment or cleaning measures
- Support clearance and reoccupation decisions
- Support compliance with asbestos regulations
When should asbestos air testing be carried out?
- Before work, to establish baseline conditions where required
- During asbestos removal work
- After work, for clearance or reoccupation checks where applicable
- When airborne asbestos contamination is suspected
- As part of periodic monitoring in sensitive environments
How does asbestos air testing work?
- Define the sampling strategy and sampling locations.
- Collect air samples on suitable filters.
- Analyse the filters in the laboratory using analytical transmission electron microscopy (ATEM/TEM).
- Identify and count asbestos fibres and calculate their concentration.
- Issue a detailed analytical report.
French standards and regulations for asbestos air testing
The sampling and analytical requirements depend on the purpose of the measurement and the applicable French regulatory framework.
- NF X 43-050 for the analysis of airborne asbestos fibres by ATEM/TEM
- The French Labour Code for occupational asbestos exposure
- The French Order of 14 August 2012 governing occupational asbestos measurements
- The French Public Health Code for the relevant measurements in buildings
There is no single regulatory limit covering every measurement:
- Occupational exposure: the French limit is 10 fibres per litre averaged over eight working hours, assessed in the air inhaled by the worker, under Article R. 4412-100 of the French Labour Code.
- Specified post-removal or post-encapsulation checks in buildings: the airborne concentration must be no greater than 5 fibres per litre before the premises are returned to use, in the circumstances covered by Article R. 1334-29-3 of the French Public Health Code.
These values apply to different measurement contexts and must not be used interchangeably.
Which buildings and projects are covered?
- Residential buildings
- Offices and premises open to the public
- Schools and nurseries
- Industrial sites
- Renovation and demolition projects

Frequently asked questions about asbestos air testing
What is the turnaround time?
Results are generally available within 24 to 72 hours, depending on the service and laboratory availability. Please confirm any 24-hour requirement with BJL before scheduling the work.
Who uses this service?
Asbestos removal contractors, asbestos surveyors, local authorities and industrial companies.
How many samples are required?
The number is determined by the sampling strategy, the applicable requirements and the type of project.
Why carry out asbestos air monitoring?
To assess airborne asbestos concentrations, support exposure control and check compliance with the applicable requirements. An air test alone does not guarantee that every asbestos-related risk has been eliminated.
